The End of Solitude
William Deresiewicz states and hints at many times during his article that technology today is depriving young people of an opportunity to be alone and to find themselves. I couldn't disagree more. We teenagers do not always have to be talking to someone or need verification from someone else about our own self worth. At least I don't, sometimes I do feel like being alone and what do i do? Turn off my phone, Turn off my computer and go outside. And I'm sure I'm not alone. Older people, like Deresiewicz often misunderstand the younger people, like myself and other teens. Because they don't know what its like to be a teenager growing up in this time with the resources and technologies that are available to us. Just like we don't know what it was like to be a teenager when they were a teenager. Which makes me question how he can say "Now, it is impossible to be alone." When in fact its not. Not all young people have a twitter, I don't. At least i don't use it. And as for facebook sure ill get on it check the news feed and maybe update my status. And sure maybe I'll text a few friends throughout the day. However I am not constantly texting or updating my facebook. Sometimes as mentioned earlier, I feel like being alone and turn all of those devices off. All in all The End of Solitude is most definitely not near, at least not in the sense that was being talked about in this article.
