The creation of new technologies is increasing sociability. There is no doubt that today’s society is very socially active due to texting, facebook, myspace, twitter and more. These technologies make it extremely easy to communicate with any person you like. Just about everybody has a facebook or a cell phone and many people have both. You can have twenty conversions going on IM on facebook, texting eight people, while having a couple friends over at the house. There is a rare time we are ever alone, even rarer that we are without our eyes glued at an LED screen.
It is human nature to seek out company from others. People want to be around others to feel loved, needed, wanted and accepted. People want to go again out with their buddy or go out with their girlfriend and have a good time. I know I enjoy having a friend over to play videogames, go play basketball, ride around in the mustang and go to the gym. My girlfriend is over at the house almost more than I am because her and my sister is best friends. Since I have practice every day after school, I am always around my teammates and coaches. Then come home to have my parents ask me about every little detail of my days. Also seeing friends at church on Sundays and not even mentioning texting a couple people throughout the day.
Although I do enjoy seeing my friends, I enjoy more my solitude. I enjoy going for a run with only my brooks and music. I enjoy going to the gym when no one is there. It is relaxing when you are by yourself. Just having time away from all the chaos and commotion can be extremely peaceful. Since I am a quite person, solitude is very enjoyable.
I don’t think that we are coming to an end to solitude, I think we are nearing the beginning. With all the new technologies and the constant contact with everybody wears on us. We get tired of seeing the same thing over and over, seeing the same person over and over. Humans are apt to fighting each other, it happens to all of us and it is just a matter of time. “Those who would find solitude must not be afraid to stand alone”(Deresiewicz). There is no need to fear solitude but to try to find solitude. Solitude is a time for yourself. To collect your thoughts, relax your mind and body.
