Society. What does this mean? Most follow it, and let it dictate their every thought. Most uneducated people will let the evils of society brainwash them, but there is a small quantity who refuse that path. Society is you and me, your sister Mary, your aunt Tessie, or whosoever has life. “ The End of Solitude” is an essay about how present society is dependent on contact with others. Yes, we are dependent upon contact amongst ourselves. We can not come home and surf facebook without reading the bulletin at least once a day. There are the few who do isolate themselves and do something productive torwords them self or others, but not enough. This is the point the author is drawing attention to. The essay refers to the word “society” on multiple occasions. This word I believe is the strongest word in the whole essay, because it includes the millions of people in society. Society is literally the public.
Sarcasm is not even a rational thought while one would read this essay. “ The End of Solitude” is a very serious piece and with the tone that ,William Deresiewicz, portrays is very meaningful. Society really is obsessed with each other. In the past present technology had not been invented, and out of boredom people would read books or express themselves. Statistics show that creativity is on a downward slope, everyone is keeping marks on everyone or poking a profile. All I ever hear now is, “where is the party at.” People really need to start taking time off of everyone else and sit in their room
and think. Figure out yourself a little and not worry about society, maybe you are a little different than the rest. I once had a friend who was literally addicted to myspace when that was the thing to have. My friend literally had counseling sessions because he would stay up at five o' clock a.m. and message all night. This is outrageous to think someone can be addicted to a social network, but it's true. How can society be obsessed with each other to that degree.
Deresiewicz, uses this word precisely at the right moments and the way he uses it really forwards his argument to the reader. He brings up great points and equally has facts to support it, this piece though can be argued, is very difficult to argue with. The word society enriches the text by securing the origin of the argument. The repetitive use strongly shows the reader that these problems are affecting everyone,
people are constantly in contact with each other and he addresses it well. He really throws this issue at you with the force of “little boy.” The way he writes he can easily sway one to his side.
Ultimately, the reason why this word is so powerful is because it involves everyone, it involves the readers everyday life, and more importantly directs the argument to my generation. Therefore, this word has a huge affect on my age group. We are the future. My generation is soon going to be the parents that raise the kids that run around around. Society is everyone and everyone should be concerned how society tends to behave. Addiction to a social network does not sound appealing to me. Nor should it you. You may say that this is obscured, but I have seen it with my own two eyes.
