Is Google Making Us Stupid? Nicholas Carr, the author of the article expresses his thoughts on this intriguing question. It is a fact that you no longer have to research long stressful hours in a library, internet technology has opened new doors to easy access. Information can be searched on Google and within three seconds page upon page of information can be seen with the click of the mouse. Is this easy access really root of our reading problems? What if it's not the fact that the internet is the contributing problem, but the fact is that maybe not everybody is interested in the history project you are assigned or the articles you are told to read? I surf the web everyday, reading is not a major struggle to me the hook just doesn't catch me
People usually are not willing to read a book if they are interested in a trade, literature is not there cup of tea. If a mechanic in the making is forced to research an article to obtain a grade, of course they will skim and browse the information. If assigned a vocational research project I am positive they can read or pay attention to the content being read. We no longer have to sit in the library stressfully reading epics to clinch onto information. The internet makes this task so convenient. This is why we are no longer reading long articles, boredom is the problem, Google can't be blamed. If I am reading why go to a library and check out the book when I can print it off the internet? When I am reading a great book I read it, when I am reading something that has no spark I can't. This is the issue, boredom. I don't have to read something boring, Google finds the information I need for me. With the main idea easily accessed why read the whole piece?
If I am trying to teach myself physics, do I really want to read Newton's Principia Mathematica? No! I want to find easily what I want to learn using Google or any other search engine. Our society is in a rush. We no longer have dinner at the table, we no longer get ourselves up and fix a hardy breakfast , we have corporation for this. Convenience is what we seek, and we have it now. It is a shame, but society as a whole looks for the staples' “easy button.” Now with technology and corporation we have our, “easy button.” The contributing factors are simply boredom and convenience. Google and corporation will never die economically it is brilliant. It has creating a new type of marketing we advertise, sell product, and make life easier with the internet. If the internet crashed tomorrow, how would that effect our lives? We would be lost. Even certain classes I take depend on the use of the internet. I do not have a physics textbook online sources substitute those, and if a had a computer that was worth anything this would be great. I can just click and I obtain fast results that teach me quicker, then sleep is accomplished after I write this essay.
