“Is Google Making Us Stupid” by, Nicolas Carr is an article that compares the internet to actually reading or the way it affects us. In the old days people turned to books to get information on everything that is going on in the world but today the internet is used to get most of the information we need on today’s society. I bet if we took a toll on how many people prefer the internet over books most people would say internet which is pretty sad. People today have become lazy when it comes to books but books don’t help with everything. The internet was design for transmission, and manipulation of information. It has been design to do our “Knowledge work”.
According to Bruce Friedman, who blogs about use of computers in medicine, the internet has altered his mental habits. “I now have almost totally lost the ability to read and absorb longish article on the web or in print”. The internet is pretty helpful for a lot of things but they way people are using it to get information isn’t. According to a study they found that people skim a site, then going from one source to another and barely going back to the source they originally started with. So if the internet is affecting the way people think then why are they still using the internet? When I read an article online I found that I skim it and pick out all the important points that stick out to me. I don’t absorb all the information so I don’t fully understand what the article is saying.
According to the OLDS “The brain has the ability to reprogram itself on the fly, altering the way it functions”. Our brain is mysterious in a lot of ways. If we had all the information attached to our brain we would be set, we would be smarter and we wouldn’t have to worry about all this internet nonsense. Now that would be nice if our brain was program like that but I guess we just have to live with what we got.
I prefer to use the internet to get basic information and I prefer to read a book to take in a lot of information at once. The internet is great when used correctly. If you go on there to read a books summary it’s not going to help you as much as picking up the actual book and reading it. I used the internet a lot along with most of the world. I do find it hard to focus after reading once source then another but I never paid attention to what affect it had on me. I get bored and forget everything I just read. You lose focus after staring at the screen for so long then you have to readjust your eyes over and over again eventually I just give up. So will I continue to us the internet? Of course! It may alter the way I think but it’s still pretty helpful.
